Education in action

With the opening of the Entrepreneurship Extravaganza yesterday, students of Ellerslie Secondary School, parents of students and a few business persons got the opportunity to display their craft.

Speaking during the Extravaganza, which was hosted by Ellerslie Secondary School, Principal of the institution, Lieutenant Colonel Errol Brathwaite explained that yesterday’s showcase was their way of transitioning several of the skills taught in the classroom into reality.

“It is ‘education in action’. In addition, it provides our students with an opportunity to engage in action learning, as today they put into practice many of the skills which have been taught in the classroom alongside industry professionals,” he said.

“As Ellerslie School celebrates our 54th year of existence, this activity showcases the best of Ellerslie,” he added.

Following the opening ceremony, Brathwaite told media that he believed the purpose of school was to prepare students for the future and teach them the basics, however, he believed that it was equally as important to give them the opportunities to “bring their education alive”

He stated that the extravaganza was their way of allowing the students to put into practice what they had learnt in the classroom.

During his remarks, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Technical and Vocational Training, Senator Dr. Romel Springer encouraged students to take the time to be introspective as they showcased their talent.

Dr. Springer told them it was important for them to welcome feedback and comments from their customers as they would learn ways in which they could make their product better.

“Accept comments and criticism even if it makes you uncomfortable, and finally, visit the booths of other exhibitors. Encourage them and give them your support,” he said.

He also noted that the world was considered a small village and students should take the opportunity to be a part of that village as they learned from experiences such as yesterday’s.
