Students of the Eden Lodge school celebrating Barbados’ 50th Anniversary of Independence.

Eden Lodge Primary show off their creative skills

The Eden Lodge Primary Independence Committee hosted an Independence classroom decorating competition focusing on the theme “The Road To 50: Then and Now”.

The competition took place at the school last Wednesday, showcasing the artistic originality and creativity of many students and teachers at the school.

The competition, which entertains and also educates the young students to know more about the history of their country, saw most of the students tapping into their creative sides.

Eight-year-old student Kanesha Clarke said, “It was a good project, I enjoyed myself decorating my class with my friends, we behaved ourselves and we want to do it again.”

Many of the designs were made from paper, ribbon and Bristol board; they painted, coloured and drew different things symbolising Barbados, such as the number 50, the Broken Trident, flying fish and the map of Barbados.

Coordinator of the school’s Independence Committee Andrea Deane noted, “At Eden Lodge we are accustomed to celebrating Independence, but this year for our 50th Anniversary we thought we should go the extra mile to do something a little more special and
definitely get the children involved, so this competition is the ideal thing for teachers and students to work together.”

She added, “I loved the response and I like the enthusiasm that the children have, because even with some classes, the teachers were not necessarily as enthused about it and the children took the initiative to try and help themselves.”

“Next year for Independence we will focus on local songs because the students don’t know many, so we want to plan a local song competition,” she said.

Throughout the upcoming days the school will host an Independence bonnet parade and a poster and colouring competition.
