Dr. Chantelle Browne-Farmer first to receive Fellowship

Paediatrician with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Dr. Chantelle Browne-Farmer is set to become the second Barbadian Paediatric Haematologist/ Oncologist with responsibility for the Eastern Caribbean.

This is, after her completion of a two-year Fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children, also known as SickKids, in Toronto, Canada. She is the first local beneficiary of the Fellowship being provided and funded through a partnership by the Sandals Foundation and SickKids.

The two-year Fellowship at SickKids is part of the SickKids-Caribbean Initiative (SCI).

Addressing the gathering at a reception held this week at Sandals Barbados, Dr. Browne-Farmer said she was extremely grateful for the opportunity to further her knowledge to be able to better care for children with various types of blood disorders and cancer in Barbados and across the region. She also outlined some the areas to be covered during her Fellowship.

“I will be part of the Division of Haematology and Oncology and I would have an opportunity to observe and become immersed in the management of some over 22000 annual cases or visits to the Cancer Clinic and the approximately 350 children whom are newly diagnosed each year in Toronto. I would also have the opportunity to learn from some of the stalwarts in the field of Haematology and therefore upon my return would be able to add to the growing clinical expertise for Paediatric Haematology/Oncology already present in the Caribbean.”

Among the guests at the reception was Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Sandals Resorts International, Adam Stewart. In his remarks, he said the Fellowship “is a CAN $200 000 commitment” on behalf of the Sandals Foundation. Stewart also pointed out that the Foundation overtime has trained “doctors and nurses in the Bahamas, in Jamaica, in St. Lucia which is a CAN $50,000 commitment.”

Meanwhile, President and Chief Executive Officer of SickKids, Ted Garrard announced that “the total financial support from the Sandals Foundation now exceeds $450 000 to this Initiative.”

Through SCI nurses from Barbados will also be trained in paediatric oncology and they will assist Dr. Browne-Farmer upon her return to the island. This training will occur from September at the School of Nursing in Trinidad and Tobago.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of his Ministry, Health Minister, John Boyce pointed out that “the opportunity to train Barbadian specialist, of course with SickKids, would allow Barbadians to ever improve its capacity to deal with these kinds of specialities.” (MG)
