CXC CEO addresses issues

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), Wayne Wesley addressed some of the major issues of students, parents and teachers during a  virtual press conference on Sunday.

Understanding grading of SBAs

Wesley outlined that the grades of school based assessments or SBAs awarded by teachers in the school system would not be the final grade. This would be finalised after the moderation process and after CXC has ensured that the standards of the regional institution would be maintained.

Chairman of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Independent Review Team, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles said in the recent draft report, the team found that there were disparities about expectations and predictions of performance and what was the outcome.

Sir Hilary stated that one of the recommendations included having workshops/training ses-sions for principals, teachers and students on the culture, rules and regulations along with an overview of the practices governing the grading of SBAs. He believed this will provide greater clarity about the process.

Ungraded statistics

The Registrar and CEO reported that there were queries for ungraded in all subjects. The CXC head indicated that it had received incomplete information hence some results were ungraded. In 2020, there were 659 queries about ungraded and queries of ungraded and absent were 1572 queries.
