CRIME RATE UP

There has been an increase in criminal activity on this island.

This was revealed by Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police of the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF), William Yearwood, who delivered remarks at the Closing Ceremony for the TEAM Programme of Prince Trust International, held at the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa recently.

“Overall, up to October 2017 when compared to the same period in 2016, the figures are 6 941 compared to 6 529, which is an increase by 412 or 6.3 per cent. I must however point out that the increase to a large extent was due to the categories Thefts and Related Crimes, Assaults and Minor Woundings.

“In recent times the Force has been experiencing heightened challenges in maintaining the level of crime at a manageable level,” he added. “Looking at Crimes Against the Person, our most recent report for 2017 indicates that the Major Crimes Against the Person for this year up to October, compared to the same period last year, shows figures of 550
[up from 439] – an increase of 111, which is a 25 per cent increase.”

Yearwood explained that “this category includes Murder, which stood at 25 when compared to 17 for the same period last year, an increase of eight or 64.7 per cent. Robbery showed figures of 199 compared to 151, an increase of 48 or 30.6 per cent. Aggravated Burglary shows 57 compared to 47, an increase of 10 or 21.3 per cent. Endangering Life increased from 38 to 82; that is by 47 or 134.3 per cent.”

When it comes to Public Order Breaches, which involves the use of weapons, there was an increase of 32 or 29.1 per cent from 142 up to October 2017, compared to 110 up to October 2016, stated that Acting ACP.

As for Sex Related Crimes, there were both increases and decreases noted.

“Under Sex Related Crimes, Rape showed figures of 63 compared to 54, an increase nine or 16.7 per cent. Indecent Assault showed a decrease from 48 to 31; that is by 17 or 35.4 per cent. Cases of Sex with a Minor, Serious Indecency and other Sex Crimes showed marginal decreases and thus there was an overall decrease in Sex Related Crimes from 158 to 142; that is by 16 or 10.1 per cent.”
