Country’s history being passed on

As the commemorative Broken Trident made its way through the hall of the Christ Church Foundation School, Barbados Ambassador to Caricom, Robert ‘Bobby’ Morris urged students to consider it the passing of the baton of the country’s history.

Speaking yesterday morning, he told the students that his generation has gone as far as it could, and insisted that it was now time for them to write the history of Barbados.

“You have to make your own pledges as to what you will do for your country. My generation, those born in 1940s, we are at the end. We have gone as far as we can. We have done all that we could in making Barbados, Barbados, not as a colonial place but an independent place. We not only hand over the trident to you, but we hand over the history to you,” he said.

Morris reminded them that they were a part of the 50th anniversary celebrations and urged them to be observant of all activities happening leading up to the climax on November 30.

“Take up the pledge and do the best you can for your school and your country ,” he added.

The ambassador also used the opportunity to point out the importance of regional integration.

“We should see all members of Caricom as our brothers and sisters belonging to a Caribbean civilization because we have a common history- including being controlled by England, a past built on slavery and in originating from Africa. We have to hold together in a world that is developing very rapidly. Unless we come together to find our way through that globalization, then we could be easily marginalized and lose everything that our forefathers have fought for,” he stated. (JMB)
