Corporate Barbados still supporting Lions, Leos

Corporate Barbados continues to be supportive of Lions Clubs and Leo Clubs on the island though this support has reduced over the years.

This was disclosed by First Vice District Governor, Sherwin Greenidge, who gave the economic challenges businesses have been facing as one of the factors for the reduction. He also made mention of the competition from other organisations.

“Corporate Barbados has been very helpful to the Lions Club. They have supported us at the eight clubs in Barbados and the Leo Clubs as well. As you will recognise, over the last couple of years… Corporate Barbados has been challenged by the economic challenges, where they would have offered good support, let’s say at Christmas; our support has been reduced, bearing in mind that we are one of three or four corporate charity groups in Barbados, so we are always vying for the same amount of money.”

He continued, “So Corporate Barbados has been reducing its intake, but we believe, and they have continued to support us once we provide them with projects that they believe will be beneficial to the community. They have found some way to support us and they continue to support us.”

The First Vice District Governor comments came on Wednesday, while addressing a press briefing at The Barbados Association of the Blind and Deaf Inc.  During this event, District Governor with responsibility for District 60 B, Errol Lee, announced that Lions Clubs International will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Forty thousand members from that organisation are expected to be in Chicago in June for an international convention.

“Our mission this year is in celebration of this 100th anniversary is to serve one million persons, which we have already done and also we want to grow the movement in recognition of this celebration of this 100th anniversary which will climax in Chicago.” He added that the four centennial areas of focus will be sight, the youth, feeding the hungry, and the environment.

“Now all these areas are core areas that we had always had in our projects, however, the emphasis in this centennial year is to emphasis these areas some more. We also called upon to do legacy projects. A legacy project is one that will, as the name suggests, stand the test of time – and will still be around long after we are gone.” (MG)
