Paula Melero-Ramirez was presented with a prize for top female student in CAPE examinations.

Combermere remains resilient

Despite everything that the Combermere School has faced over the 2014-2015 school year, its walls are not only standing, but it is punching far beyond its weight. This is according to the Principal of the institution, Vere Parris during the school’s Speech Day and Prize Giving Ceremony.

During term one of the school year, the school has seen the then prevalent Chikungunya virus spreading which resulted in many students and teachers being absent. Moreover, later in that same school year, students of the school were temporarily relocated to the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic Campus and Erdiston Teachers’ Training College due to environmental problems which posed some challenges as well.

However, Parris was pleased to announce that despite these things, the students of the school still did extremely well in their CAPE and CSEC examinations. Going into detail, the Principal stated that the school introduced Law for the first time at CAPE level and is currently enjoying the 100 per cent pass rate received. Added to that, Economics was also a recently added subject at the CAPE level and that too had a high pass rate. This is an incredible achievement since there were very limited resources for these subjects. To this end, Parris acknowledged the top performers in CAPE who were Alexander Huey and Paula Melero-Ramirez.

By the same token, Alanna Brathwaite and Eric Trotman, the latter of whom is studying overseas, were awarded top female and male respectively in their CSEC examinations. They both managed to secure the highest number of Grade Ones at the school. Among the most improved subjects at the CSEC level were Mathematics and Principles of Business in which failures were few.

Parris congratulated the students for the success that they have worked hard to achieve as well as teachers who have helped to facilitate this process.
