CMPI marking Black History Month with virtual programme

Though customary activities held for Black History Month have been impacted by COVID-19, Pan-Africanist David Denny says this February’s observance of the occasion is still important.

It is for this reason the General Secretary of the Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration (CMPI) said that organisation has made plans to have a virtual programme at month-end.

“The Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration we are planning a programme for the ending of February, a programme that will be online so as to be able to recognise Black History Month during this 2021 period. It is going to be an online rally with cultural artistes and solidarity messages. We are looking at the last Saturday of February.”

Denny went on to speak about the significance of Black History Month and why more Barbadians in their own way should take the time to observe it during the National Pause and throughout the entire month.

“It gives us an opportunity to reflect on our history and our way of life and to look at the contributions that Africans have made in terms of the development, especially for Africans in the diaspora. It gives us the time so we can reflect on our past and our history and look at our culture and way of life and to look at a lot of the work that people have been doing for the development of our people.”

He indicated that going forward more should be done locally to promote it. He stated, “We need to because you don’t know what is going to happen in the future and therefore, we need to be able to organise and co-ordinate so that we can have these kinds of programmes also online. Even if the country reopens, we should also try to every day have an activity online.”
