Claims of unequal treatment absurd

This is how the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) described accusations of political victimization from the Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP).

In a statement issued by after its recent monthly meeting, and signed by General Secretary George Pilgrim, the DLP’s General Council rejected the idea that “a government in modern Barbados would deny or purposely set about to punish people in a particular geographical area due to political preference.”

Insisting that the improvement of the quality of life and delivery of services was the objective of the Stuart-led administration, the Council assured that the “years of politics of spite” displayed during the BLP’s time in power were in the past.

Congratulating Minister of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management Dr. David Estwick and the Barbados Water Authority team for their efforts to improve water delivery to rural residents, the council accused the former BLP-administration of abandoning the water mains replacement program, a project which now has a completion date.

“After three successive terms, key opposition members of Parliament were unable to convince their colleagues of the importance of their very crucial infrastructural improvement,” it stressed.

Admitting that there will be “levels of discomfort” the council nevertheless added that it could not recall in the opposition’s past where this was occurring that attempts were made by the opposition to install community tans and schedule water tankers into impacted areas.

“The DLP remains resolute in its efforts not to discriminate against or punish any geographical area and to treat all Barbadians as deserving of equal treatment. We have not forgotten the scars of the abandoned polyclinic in St. John, which can be described as pure politics of spite. The council again thanks and congratulates Minister Estwick and his team at the BWA for staying the course and pushing ahead with the much needed water mains replacement program,” the statement concluded.
