Chinese Embassy looking forward to Fish and Dragon Festival

The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Barbados is inviting all Barbadians to be a part of the upcoming Fish and Dragon Festival, which will be held at Church Village Green, February 4th 2017.

Zou Xi, new Political Counsellor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Barbados, noted that there has been an increase in persons wanting to know more about the Chinese culture. He revealed that for two consecutive years, the Fish and Dragon Festival was held between the Chinese Embassy and Barbados. He said that by attending this event, Barbadians will continue to learn about the Chinese culture which will in turn strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

He went on to say that it is the Embassy’s hope that there will be performances from local artistes as well as a Chinese Acrobatic Art Group. He added that booths will also be set up presenting things such as calligraphy, paper cutting and daily health care tips, as well as a presentation of Chinese cuisine from the Chinese Association.

Public Affairs Officer of the Central Bank of Barbados, Novaline Brewster expressed that the Festival was a great way for Barbadians to experience the China/Barbados culture at its best. She revealed that the Bank partnered with the producer of the 2017 edition, Adisa Andwele and expressed that the festival was a welcomed addition to the many festivals that were hosted in Barbados.

Brewster announced that the festival is now in its third year of existence and will explore a merger of the Chinese and Barbadian Cultures. She noted that in Chinese astrology, 2017 is the year of the Rooster.

“The festival will therefore be amusing, colourful, bold and capture the confidence and talent of thee two countries, consistent with the characteristics of the rooster or the Bajan “fowl cock”, as we in Barbados would say,” she said.

She expressed that the Bank was delighted to be associated with the festival and is extremely aware of the growing significance internationally of China and the growing and maturing relationship between China and Barbados. She also added that this year also marks the 40th Anniversary of Bilateral relations, and it is a partnership that they are extremely proud of as they have seen the benefits in the culture, economic, social and educational sectors over the years.

She said that she hoped that through the festival, there is a strengthening of the “long, vibrant relationship” between the two countries, and an exposure to Barbadians of the rich culture, heritage, education and other opportunities that China offers.
