Centenarian still full of life

Centenarian Myrtle Eumilda Lucas still enjoys a good laugh.

And yesterday, her sense of humour was evident as she and His Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave shared some light moments during his visit to celebrate her birthday.

Family and friends gathered at Lower Estate Heights and toasted Ms Lucas, a mother of four, grandmother of five and great-grandmother of five.

Born in Ebenezer, St Philip, Ms Lucas spent the last 70 years in Richmond, St Michael and worked as a domestic for many years.

Grandson Michael Lucas described her as intelligent, kind, energetic and a God-fearing woman, who still to this day gets on her knees and says her prayers asking for strength.

He also recalled his grandmother being the heart of the Richmond community.

“I would hear stories of people going to her house when they had nothing to eat, and she would not turn away anyone even though she had very little herself. Many of those same individuals she assisted never forgot her, and we have some of them celebrating with her today,” he said.

“As a domestic you don’t get paid a lot, but we never went without food, as well as love and discipline…She would constantly preach to us as well, making sure that we don’t forget to give thanks and praise,” he told the media.

Although she is experiencing hearing loss in one ear, that didn’t stop her from communicating with the Governor General, who expressed that he has he never before visited a centenarian as talkative as her.
