The island’s newest centenarian Olga Boyce alongside Her Excellency, Governor General Dame Sandra Mason.

Centenarian Olga Boyce still going strong

Barbados’ newest centenarian Olga Boyce wholeheartedly rendered the words ‘Tell it to Jesus, He’ll understand’ from her favourite hymn, during her birthday celebrations yesterday.

"Auntie Olga" as she is affectionately known, not only marked the milestone surrounded by family who visited her at the Geriatric Hospital, but she also
received a special visit from Her Excellency Governor General Dame Sandra Mason.

The centenarian expressed her delight in reaching 100 years and attributed her longevity to her faith in God, as well as her “good looks”.

Although the witty and quick-thinking Boyce resided in Mount Friendship, St. Michael, for over 60 years, she declared to Her Excellency that she is a “Josephine”.

“I came from Cambridge in St. Joseph and went to school at St. Joseph Girls’,” she recalled, also sharing that she worked as a domestic.

The devout Christian, a long-standing member of St Barnabas Anglican Church had two children (both deceased) and has nine grandchildren.

Goldeen Herbert described her aunt as a special, God-fearing person.

“From when I was young she encouraged me to serve God. I am so blessed and honoured to see her reach this milestone.”

Delighted to see Boyce in such high spirits, Dame Mason expressed to the family “I would want that all of you continue to care for her. People like Ms. Olga would have been the persons who would have built Barbados; the Barbados that we are presently enjoying – that is why we should revere people like her. The fact that she is singing her very special song means that she has a real commitment to God.”
