These young lads were all too happy to wear some of the gear brought by the Barbados Defence Force.

Boys’ week at Bay Primary a success

The highly anticipated Boys’ Week at Bay Primary School is ongoing for another year. The high anticipation was said to come from the boys who enjoyed the week for the past three years and were making inquiries about it before the planning had even begun.

Kirt Jordan, Teacher at Bay Primary School and Co-ordinator of Boys’ Week 2016, stated, “This week we are focusing on boys only, basically the male population of the school, for example, teachers, parents and students.”

The special week began last Friday and continued on Tuesday with a career showcase focusing on military service organisations. On hand were the Barbados Defence Force, the Royal Barbados Police Force and the Barbados Prison Service. Jordan explained that these were aimed at exposing the boys to prospective careers. “We are looking for some positive male interaction with the boys, showing them that they could be successful as well and to show them that they can choose this as a career option when they get older,” stated Jordan.

The decision to involve the military service organisations were spot on as the boys barely allowed their attention to wander from what each representative was doing. The boys were given insight on how they could prospectively join the various organisations and were given an idea of the Do’s and Don’ts of hoping to enter any of the service organisations. What was even more fun for them, was the demonstrations that they benefitted from; some of them never seeing drills by the Barbados Defence Force before.

However, this is but only one part of what the week has in store for the young lads. Jordan went on to say, “Yesterday morning we had the boys play an active role in planning morning assembly and there was also the presentation to the essay winner… we continue tomorrow (being today) with a session for fathers as dads are important too and they will be coming in and playing cricket, dominoes and cards after school at 4 p.m.,” explained an excited Jordan.

On Thursday, it will be the boys’ turn to be engaged in physical activities. They will be partaking in activities such as road tennis, cricket and football and on Friday will be a tour heading to the Wildlife Reserve and the week will be culminating at Farley Hill National Park.
