Launching ‘Covenant of Hope’

The return to values-based politics is important to the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) and its existence.

Political Leader, the Hon. Mia Mottley made this clear as she revealed the upcoming launch of the Party’s ‘Covenant of Hope’ on May 5th at the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) ,Solidarity House.

“Some may ask why a covenant. Because what is required of us now is to go beyond duty and to work together to achieve what neither of us can achieve alone,” she explained to the congregation at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral for the Party’s 78th Anniversary Service yesterday.

“We need more than ever to recognise that we will not choose the environment, we will not choose the adversaries, we will not choose the challenges, but we will choose the way in which we respond and summon the courage and the grace to face it all. And if we can do that, recognising that our mission of enfranchisement of our people, started by Sir Grantley but
not yet completed – that was a mission of empowerment of our people started by Sir Grantley and the others who worked with him – but not yet achieved.

“Whether you are members of this party or whether you are supporters or whether you are not – we have a duty to work with you all and to include you. For this mission of enfranchisement, empowerment and inclusion can only be obtained by us setting out to work together and keep it central, whether it is within our economic relationships, social relationships, our governance relationships or simply being a citizen of this country.”

She further stressed: “Our country needs us now more than ever…As we rise to the occasion, let us remember that ours is a mission of service, that we are to be stewards in a long line such that those can come after us and continue the task.”

Mottley also took the opportunity to thank members of the Party and scores of supporters who filled the church.

Also in attendance was expelled Christ Church West MP Dr Maria Agard who sat up front among the hierarchy of the party.
