BEF/Scotiabank $20 Challenge winners awarded

Ashley Mason, Jayden Forde, Brian Wood and Kadeem Alleyne have something in common. Their business, ‘Kulture Clothing’ was judged Microbusiness of the Year.

The Lodge School students were celebrated during last Saturday’s BEF/Scotiabank $20 Challenge Awards held at The Concorde Experience.

They were also winners in the categories Innovation in Agricultural Products and Service; Most Market Ready Business and copped the Social Media Award.

The BEF/Scotiabank $20 Challenge is in its 7th cycle and this cycle was launched last year in September. Since its introduction in 2011, the Challenge has attracted fourth and fifth year pupils from public and private schools islandwide to be involved.

The Challenge is carried out for ten weeks by the Barbados Entrepreneurship Foundation (BEF). A total of 285 students participated, this is an increase from the 150 students in the previous year. The Largest School Contingent prize 2017/2018 was awarded to the Graydon Sealy Secondary School. This school additionally won big in the Innovation in Agroprocessing category.

Also in the winner’s circle was Cheynne Hall, whose company ‘Timeless Treasures’ captured the Most Market Ready Business and Excellence in Marketing Strategy & Sustainability titles. She came second in the Market Place.

The night was a celebratory one for many students and their efforts were lauded. Queen’s College Alyssa Blades and Melanie Alleyne were two such participants on the receiving end of applause. Their business ‘Lysmel Origami Creations’ won in the Innovation in Arts & Craft category. Meanwhile, The Codrington School’s Zed Layson and Nicolas Lemieux business, ‘ENZY’, won the Excellence in Marketing Research award and came first in the Market Place.

Other top prizes on the night went to Harrison College’s Alexander Yarde who won the $20 Challenge Spirit of Enterprise Award 2018, St. Ursuline Convent won the Green Business of the Year title and The Springer Memorial School’s Tia Simmons, Shanique Harewood, Kayla Holligan, Gabrielle Hutchison and Greshé Hall – Alleyne’s business was awarded the titles of Best Example of Cooperative Spirit for 2017/18 and Best Example of Teamwork.

The Lodge School’s Kaliha Taylor, Harrison College’s Ibriel Holder, The Codrington School’s Laurenne Mottley and The St. Michael School’s Mahendra Chatram and Latrell Clarke were also among the night’s top awardees.
