THE Division of Fine Arts, the Liberal Arts Division, the Natural Sciences Division, the Computer Science Department, the Hospitality Institute and the Nursing Department were among the various divisions of the Barbados Community College (BCC) that were on hand to talk to students about what they have to offer.

The Assistant Registrar at the BCC, Carolyn Woodroffe-Holder, told The Barbados Advocate on the sidelines of the informational expo that the sessions were for fifth form students at secondary schools.

She stated that sessions like this one have not been done in a while and as a result, the administrative staff in her department felt that such a session would be useful for students looking to enter the College come September to learn more about the College and its offerings.

“We thought that it was necessary to give these students of the secondary schools an opportunity to see what is offered at the Barbados Community College and to see what is offered by the various departments and then they can make choices to pursue their future education.”

It will be a two day-event with various sessions being held throughout the day as students from the different secondary schools attend for different sessions. It would also be a way of celebrating their 50th years of existence.

“We divided the 26 secondary schools into different areas so that we do not have all of them at one time. So all of the 26 schools were invited. Not all of them were able to come because of inter-school sports and so on, but we should have at least four schools here this morning and the second session should start at 12.30 pm until 3 pm. So we divided the day into two sessions 9 am until 11.30 am and then 12.30pm until 3 pm.”

Representatives from the various departments, whether they be tutors or students were also on hand to speak to students about their particular divisions, the different programmes offered under their division, the entry requirements and to provide advice, such as whether the students meet the entry requirements or if they would need to upgrade.

Acknowledging that the entry requirements would vary from programme to programme, she stated that the minimum requirement is usually four CXCs with English Language being compulsory. She therefore advised them to put in the necessary work to ensure that they meet these requirements.

“Work hard. Make sure that you put in the time and the effort and once you do that, we can welcome them as a student of the Barbados Community College.”
Woodroffe-Holder added that the BCC experience would be one that would benefit them, both in the short-term as well as the long-term.

“Taking a step to enter the Barbados Community College is one of the most awesome things that you can do to propel your educational journey. We have a lot of facilities here that can help you as you go along and we think that you would benefit tremendously from being here at the Barbados Community College.”
