Barbadians continue to adapt to ‘new normal’

IT has been just about a week since the island had its last significant deposit of ash from the La Soufrière volcano and Barbadians are doing their best to adapt to the situation. With many well aware that the ‘dust’ will be with us for quite some time, this past weekend saw many of us making moves to get back to the unusual routine of life that we have been handed.

Cleaning up has been the highest priority on the list for most with hardware and housewares stores reporting bumper sales as everyone tries to get their hands on what they need to make their surroundings as tidy as possible. With a joint thrust from Government and the private sector to clean major roadways in Barbados, many members of close-knit communities across the island have taken the initiative to take care of their neighbourhoods – a trend that has been catching like wildfire.

With the Grantley Adams International Airport and the Barbados Port being reopened after being closed because of the effects of the ashfall, the island is once again good for the movement of people and cargo. Also, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Information and Public Affairs is set to take the lead in a damage assessment and needs analysis to determine the level of fallout experienced in Barbados.

Despite all that is going on, visitors and locals alike have been doing the most to not let life pass them by. Restaurants, activities and public places are being patronised as much as conditions allow as the economy continues to attempt to right itself after the added blow of a volcanic eruption on top of the COVID-19 pandemic.
