B’DOS RECEIVES DONATION OF VACCINES FROM CANADA

AS health officials con- tinue to tackle a recent upsurge in COVID-19 cases, this island has re- ceived a donation of COVID-19 vaccines from the Government of Canada.
The donation of 30,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine ar- rived in Barbados yesterday at the Grantley Adams International Airport. It was
handed over to Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley by Chargé d’affaires at the High Commission of Canada, Ann Cleminson.
The day’s gift places this country in a position to fully vaccinate another 15,000 of its citizens against COVID-19. As of August 31st, the Health Ministry’s Barbados COVID- 19 Situation Report indicated that 111,148 persons have re-
ceived their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccines while 94, 687 people or 34.9 percent of the population have received second doses and therefore, they are fully vaccinated.
Canada’s donation of the 30,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine is being viewed by Barbados as an ac- ceptance and appreciation of Barbados’ position on the need for the equitable distribution
of vaccines.
The latest donation comes on
the heels of that received by Barbados in late August. On August 24th, the island ac- cepted the third and final tranche of vaccines through the COVAX facility. The arrival of those vaccines placed members of the public who wish to be vaccinated in a position where they can select from one of three brands – AstraZeneca,
Pfizer and Sinopharm, at the vaccination centres.
On August 31st, it was re- ported that there were 40 new COVID-19 cases and 370 peo- ple in isolation. Meanwhile, there have been 5,072 con- firmed cases of the virus recorded since the pandemic commenced in March last year. Fifty-one persons have died from the virus.(MG/PR)
