Attorney General calls for a forgiving society

Given Senator Dr. David Durant’s suggestion to release 50 prisoners from Her Majesty’s Prisons Dodds as part of the 50th anniversary of Independence celebrations, Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, the Hon. Adriel Brathwaite, is asking that the Barbadian society be a more forgiving one.

While not indicating whether or not the Government will follow through on the suggestion, Brathwaite told a congregation gathered at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre that forgiveness seems to have disappeared. Moreover, he stated that the Government should not have to consider the ramifications of reintegrating such persons just because the society seems to no longer believe in second chances. That is, until it is one of their own.

To this end, Brathwaite acknowledged and expressed gratitude to Apostle Mark White and his wife, Pastor Richelle White, for their 20 years of service in promoting second chances. In addressing the Christian couple, Brathwaite asked that they continue their work in helping to minister.

Turning his attention to the young people, the Attorney General made a plea that serious attention needed to be paid to them. He noted that he was especially happy to see the youth giving their talents and time to God in the ongoing appreciation service for Mr. and Mrs. White, but is jolted by the reality that there is still much work that needs to be done among the younger group.
