Attorney denies Mottley’s charges

During her reply to the Budget, Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley focused on Attorney-at-Law Hal Gollop in his capacity as legal consultant for the Barbados Water Authority project at the Pine, and insinuated that he was involved in illegal activity during the last election in the St. Michael South constituency.

In light of these charges, which are of concern to this newspaper, The Barbados Advocate reached out to Mr. Gollop for his response to these allegations. His statement on the matter is presented below:

“The Leader of the Opposition has asked me to serve in various capacities in ministries which she has held, which suggests that she thought I was of sound value to her as a Minister and to the country in general.

“I served for 14 years as a member of the NCF board, seven years on the Electoral and Boundaries Commission board, and was one of four persons entrusted with the drafting of a republican constitution for Barbados, all of which fell under ministries headed by Ms. Mottley.

“In respect of the allegation relating to vote-buying, I would simply challenge Ms. Mottley to leave the safety of parliamentary privilege and come out, even as close by as Parliament Square or (National Heroes) Square, and repeat the same charge,” he said.
