Artists welcome!

Ambassador Gustavo Martinez Pandiani reaffirmed his commitment to make the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in Barbados open to local artists to showcase their work.

He was at the time addressing the opening of “Glimpse Barbados” at the Embassy located at Lucerne Building, Hastings, Christ Church on Saturday night.

This exhibition highlights the work of Barbadian Fine Arts Photographer Ahmad Rasheed Boodhoo, who possesses over 30 years of experience in the field.

“A year ago we decided to open this gallery to the Barbadian art community. We are very pleased, not only because they have a space to exhibit their work, but also because they have a space to sell their work.”

“If you are an artist and you need a space to exhibit your work get in touch with the Embassy and we will make sure you are part of this beautiful project, which is bringing together the people of Argentina and Barbados,” he said, expressing appreciation to Curator Oneka Small.

Small described the exhibition by Boodhoo as “very important” especially this time of year. She explained that ‘Glimpse Barbados’, “captures the essence of who we are as a people and a country in photography.”

“This exhibition is deliberately mounted in November. As we celebrate independence, we should do so with a deeper reflection of ourselves, thoughts, words and deeds as a people. Are we on the right path? Are we maintaining our cultural identity? Who and what makes up the contemporary Bajan? Can we be better and do better?”

“Rasheed Boodhoo helps us with our analysis by opening our eyes to what is and what isn’t captured and displayed in this exhibition… Many of the works are informed by the sea. It has been an integral part of our history and it remains so in the present,” Small pointed out.

An appreciative Boodhoo thanked Ambassador Pandiani for the opportunity, as well as giving thanks to Small for mounting the exhibition which runs until November 29.

He shared with guests, who included art enthusiasts and members of the diplomatic corps, “As a self-taught photo-artist, I journey around this gem of an island seeing how we are losing the sights and sounds as we ‘develop’.”

“I don’t just take a photograph – as anyone today can do that. I capture the emotion it produces upon me and I remove my ego from the journey in search for its beauty.” (TL)
