Arthur Smith Primary students urged not to settle in life

Always strive for excellence.

Principal of Arthur Smith Primary School, Jenifer Hoyte impressed this upon the 2016 graduation class, and explained that excellence is not a skill, but an attitude.

Addressing the annual ceremony held at Graydon Sealy Secondary School, last Thursday she therefore suggested that along with focusing on their studies, they should become involved in extracurricular activities at their new schools.

“Such activities will provide the balance you need, so that would not become bored and distracted,” she explained.

This year 61 students wrote the Barbados Secondary School Entrance Examination (BSSEE) – all gaining places in public secondary schools.

Mrs Hoyte congratulated the pupils on their performance and wished them success in their pursuit of secondary education, however urged them to remember and practice the good values and morals that they were taught at Arthur Smith Primary School.

“These are the foundation and the support systems on which you will live and which will steer you in the right direction when you are attempting to stray from the right path,” she stressed.

The Principal further urged parents to continue to closely monitor the progress of their children, giving them the necessary support as they enter secondary school.

“Encourage them to be involved in positive activities so that they may create balance in their lives...Pay attention to their behaviour, note when there is change and investigate the reason for such change. Do not leave this to chance, for in so doing, you may discover too late that your child is experiencing a problem which is altered his or her behaviour and negatively impacting on his or her work.”

This year’s top performer at Arthur Smith Primary School was Nathan Marshall. He will be attending Queen’s College in September after gaining a score of 244.73 ‘B’.

Top girl, Jenasha Knights scored 235.43 ‘B’ and she will be attending Combermere School. (TL)
