All cases of elder abuse will be investigated

All cases of elderly abuse would be investigated for accuracy before further action is taken on behalf of these persons.

This is coming from Senator Dr. David Durant, Co-Founder of Restoration Ministries International who spoke to the media recently in his office.

Referring to the recent case of a 37-year old nursing employee who was caught abusing an elderly woman at the home where she worked, he said that unfortunately this is not an isolated incident.

“That is not an isolated situation as I said to the press as well. As a matter of fact, since I got up and started looking at this one and got the police to go and start to deal with it, I have seen other cases of abuse, I have received other reports. Some have been sent to me, some have called me. So there are a number of others now that I am beginning to look into and once they are true, then I would have them investigated. Right?”

However, before they go ahead with future cases of elderly persons, the police and social service agencies have to investigate the matter first in order to ensure that it is a case of abuse since sometimes persons tend to want to “jump on the bandwagon” when it comes to calling in cases of abuse.

“But I will check first for the accuracy because you know, persons tend to jump on the bandwagon and call and say that this is happening and then it is not true. I want to make sure that it is true and once I have evidence that they are true, then I believe that we should proceed because we need to save the elderly from abuse in the island and we need to have a zero tolerance for elderly abuse and that is why I would move so hastily.”

He said as it relates to this particular incident, he first heard about it from someone who called him from Long Island, New York and originally, he did not believe that it had happened in Barbados, but after further investigations, he found out that it was indeed in this country that this case of elderly abuse took place.

Pastor Durant said that he then found out where it was and went to the police station to file a report and have them go there and he himself went there “and that is how the case broke out.”
