Pupils of the Grantley Adams Memorial Secondary School have been encouraged to aim to be individuals of worth.

Bishop Marlon Jones, of the Mount Pisgah Spiritual Baptist Church, gave this advice while reminding students that they are able to accomplish much today because of the efforts of their African ancestors, who paved the way for them.

“Many died in the struggle to be free and for this cause we should be thankful because we stand on the shoulders of those who survived. We stand on the shoulders of great men and women. So it is important that we strive to be persons of worth, to do what you love within the parameters of the law and while we are doing these things to help a brother or a sister along the way.”

Jones further told students that they can be whoever they want to be. He noted, “You just need the passion and you just need to seek it and when you have the passion and you seek something, doors will open. No matter what the obstacles are in your life, never stop running, go after your dreams.”

Jones spoke during African Awareness Month activities yesterday at the school. It was held under the theme ‘Tribute to Haiti and the Haiti Relief Effort’.

During his address, he additionally reminded students that they “are here for a purpose and with a purpose”. Furthermore, Jones urged them to “have a sense of pride” in who they were and not to let anyone judge them “by the colour of your skin”. He also told them that “it isn’t necessary to bleach for acceptance... If you have to bleach your skin for acceptance, then that is telling me that you don’t like who you are". (MG)
