Agrofest sees good turnout from schools

Agrofest Coordinator, Theodore Fraser, has reported good attendance and participation from schools in this year’s national agricultural exhibition.

The annual three-day event is being held once again in Queen’s Park, and students from public and private schools converged at this location yesterday to enjoy all on offer during day one of the showcase.

“So far things have been running pretty smoothly. From the time we opened this morning [Friday] we had a number of schools who came in even before the gates were officially opened at 10 o’clock. So we have seen a good turnout from the schools again this year. We also have, in keeping with previous years, a number of schools who are actually having exhibits at the event. There are about seven or eight of them [which] is about the same as last year,” Fraser stated.

One school that is involved in the exhibition for the first time is the Lester Vaughan Secondary. At their booth are crops grown by the school as well as treats and craft created their home economics department and art department respectively. Agriculture Science teacher, Osyth Clarke, said they opted to participate on this occasion because “it is about time that we have positive representation showcasing a little bit of what Lester Vaughan is capable of”.

She added that she hopes the students’ involvement would help them to “realise that there is a lot of positive being associated with agriculture in general, and a festival such as this helps them to see exactly all the various areas that can be represented from the animal aspect of it to the plants”.

As attendees traversed the Park, stops were made to view livestock, vegetables, fruits and plants. Many pupils used the outing to purchase locally made foods and drinks as well.

One popular attraction with the primary school students were the booths where different types of fish were on sale. Pupils also gravitated to the pasture near the pavilion where they participated in the Farmer Choice Ole Time Bajan Olympics, which was hosted by Fuhnominon and KB Kleen. These games included the sack race, the roller race and a hula hoop challenge.
