11-plus students receive pep talk

Students within the St Michael North West Constituency sitting the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination (BSSEE) received some words of encouragement from Member of Parliament, Christopher Sinckler on Friday.

The Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs visited St Stephen’s Primary, Eagle Hall Primary and Deacons Primary school, urging students to do their very best during the May 3rd examination.

“I know you are going to do your best because you had the best possible preparation from your teachers… Of course nothing is possible without the guidance and blessing of Almighty God,” he expressed while at Deacons Primary.

“Try to remember as much as you can, don’t spend a lot of time on a question that you find difficult at that point in time – move on and go back to it”.

Sinckler impressed upon all students that it doesn’t matter which school they pass for; but it is what they do when they get there. A past student of Garrison Secondary, he used himself as a prime example.

“I didn’t go to one of the older secondary schools but I did just as good or in some instances much better than some of my colleagues who went to Harrison College or Queen’s College,” he told the students at Eagle Hall Primary.

“When you do the exam and you get marks for Harrison College that is fantastic. But, if your marks take you to Springer Memorial, Deighton Griffith, Graydon Sealy (formerly Garrison); please remember it is what you do when you get there...Whatever mark you receive you are special; you are all winner.”

The MP also gave the students extra inspiration by informing them about the Lawson Weekes Scholarship Programme, an initiative named after the former Parliamentary Representative of that Constituency and Speaker of Barbados’ House of Assembly. The Programme will award the top students from the three schools, as well as the most improved.

According to the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, 3525 students which comprises 1 784 males and 1 741 females are registered to write the examination at 22 secondary schools across the island. (TL)
