Americans ‘Trumped’

Well, well, well! Americans have spoken and history has been made as billionaire Donald Trump defied all naysayers, critics, polls and even fellow Republicans to successfully become the 45th President of the United States.

When his candidacy first came to the ears of the public, many persons were surprised and thought it could only be a prank or a joke. But two years later, he and his supporters are the ones smiling. Described by many, including several international media houses, as “racist”, “sexist” and “ a bigot” due to his rants on women, persons of colour, and Muslims, it was thought to be a foregone conclusion that the closest he would get to the White House was by having his chauffeur drive him through Pennsylvania Avenue. However, the only thing in life that is certain is death, as the President-elect has clearly indicated that taxes can be evaded.

Now that the election and the shock is over and with the inauguration three months away, the question remains as to whether there is time for the slate to be wiped clean and for the new leader of the Free World to apologise and show a different face to all those he offended during his candidacy, while continuing to hold the support of those who believe in his promise to “build a wall” and “ban all Muslims” from entering the country.

After all, his victory speech in the wee hours of yesterday morning already indicated a back-pedalling from the divisive stance used to draw so many into his campaign:

“Now it is time for America to bind the wounds of division, have to get together. To all Republicans and Democrats and Independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people. It is time. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be President for all of Americans, and this is so important to me. For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country. As I’ve said from the beginning, ours was not a campaign but rather an incredible and great movement, made up of millions of hard-working men and women who love their country and want a better, brighter future for themselves and for their family. It is a movement comprised of Americans from all races, religions, backgrounds, and beliefs, who want and expect our government to serve the people – and serve the people it will. Working together, we will begin the urgent task of rebuilding our nation and renewing the American dream.”

What a difference a few hours make! But was it sincere? Only God knows and He always tells in time.
