BUSINESS MONDAY - FOCUS ON ROEBUCK STREET

A new corporation has been launched in Barbados and immediately it has identified a number of projects on which to focus, including the redevelopment of Roebuck Street.

Called the Broken Trident, the 501C3 Corporation will be seeking to allow Barbadians to make tax deductible contributions for use in Barbados, said attorney-at-law Sir Trevor Carmichael, one of the trustees of the Corporation.

Presenting details about the new set-up and the work to be undertaken, the attorney-at-law said that they have identified a number of projects which will be undertaken in the coming months.

One of the projects, he said, is the redevelopment of Codrington College, St. John. In addition, ongoing work will continue at the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, which is the beneficiary of a one-million dollar donation for a Wall Garden Theatre.

Also among the projects is the redevelopment of Roebuck Street. Saying that he is very passionate about the proposed Roebuck Street project, Sir Trevor said that work will commence next month on an iconic Roebuck Street building, which will be restored and will feature among things a coffee shop and office space on the top floor of the building.

“Eventually, we want Roebuck Street to become the premier street that it was back in its heyday,” he said during one of the sessions at the Network Consultation at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Conference Centre.

“There is something about Roebuck Street – if you think about it, it is more Barbadian in a commercial sense than Broad Street or any where else you can imagine. So we are working on that,” said Carmichael.

Some work will also be done on the Jewish Synagogue, although it won’t be a case of adding to the work already done there. He added that the Synagogue has benefited from a two-million dollar donation. Sir Trevor further stated and that the entire area around Synagogue Lane – where the old Barbados National Bank (BNB) building was located – is being regenerated.

Come November, it should be opened for the 50th anniversary Independence celebration.

Apart from Sir Trevor, other trustees are Bishop of Barbados, John Holder; Angela Robinson; Giles Carmichael (who lives in New York); and Bruce Zagaris, an attorney-at-law who is based in Washington D.C.

“So 5013C is going to become accessible to every Barbadian,” he assured. (JB)
