BCCI President, Eddie Abed.

Abed: Step in the right direction

THE decision by Government to have someone responsible for business facilitation has been lauded by the head of a local private sector body.

He is Eddie Abed, who said that having Senator Darcy Boyce take on the responsibility is a step in the right direction. Senator Boyce is Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Abed told the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) meeting that they have been resolute in demanding better business facilitation and that there be improvements in this area.

“We are confident that this is a step in the right direction,” said Abed, who was confirmed as President of the BCCI at the organisation’s annual general meeting on Tuesday.

He also stated that they in the private sector are keen to meet with Senator Boyce on a regular basis to bring resolution to the myriad of unacceptably long outstanding issues.

Abed said that these issues are related to the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA), the Custom and Excise Department and timely payments services by Government departments.

The BCCI President said that so far this year they in the BCCI have had productive meetings with the Prime Minister and some of his Cabinet Ministers, the Leader of the Opposition, the United Nations Development Programme and the Social Partnership.

“We met with them to advance the needs of our members. I am convinced that more can be achieved if we can meet on a greater frequency with
a smaller group,” Abed added.

He highlighted the need for growing the economy, reducing the island’s national debt, increasing productivity in the public and private sectors, and earning and saving foreign exchange.

“We remain the most respected business voice in Barbados and with that comes responsibility to assist in problem solving and not merely problem spotting,” said the President. (JB)
