Invest Barbados office to be re-established in Beijing

BARBADOS will continue to explore business oppor-tunities with China with the re-establishment of an Invest Barbados office in Beijing within the next six weeks.

This was revealed by Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley during a reception to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China at Hilton Barbados on Monday evening.

Highlighting the linkages that have anchored relations between the two countries, including the anti avoidance treaty, double taxation and bilateral investment treaties, Prime Minister Mottley stated: “We do not make this decision lightly but we do so recognising that in the same way that treaty was able to bring significant benefits to Chinese firms before the protocol was established, that there is also still an opportunity for Chinese firms to use Barbados as a beachhead for investment, as well as, for protection as Chinese firms seek to invest in other countries across the globe and particularly within this hemisphere; that requires that additional level of protection afforded to you by a treaty arrangements between our two countries.”

“...Not to have persons come to work every day to promote these treaties is effectively not to have them at all. And hence the decision of our government to re-establish the office in Beijing, but serving all of China and it will continue to grow as needs require as we move forward.”

Prime Minister Mottley said she is “happy” with discussions for the continued expansion of our relationship with respect to different projects. “...And without getting into details and satisfied that over the course of the next few months you will see significant progress on both the existing projects as well as new projects which are in early discussion and are the subject of visits between our two countries.”

Additionally, the Prime Minister revealed that Barbados signed a Memorandum of Understanding for China’s Belt and Road Initiative which she said is expected to lead to tangible benefits for both countries. “Yours from the point of view of investment and the realisation of resources and ours as a part and parcel of our developmental process in building back out key aspects of this country,” the Prime Minister stated.
