Young road tennis players take to Broad Street

Broad Street came alive yesterday as some of the primary schools that will be competing in the 2016 National Primary Schools’ Road Tennis Championship took to the streets for the launch.

With a record number of participants this year, the tournament continues to grow and now includes 60 schools.

Hoping to defend their title is St. Cyprian’s Boys’ School, the team winners last year.

Not only has the number of participants increased, but also the sponsors as well. Returning as title sponsors are Cave Shepherd and Berger Paints.

Coordinator Ricardo Marshall was on hand to thank the sponsors as the championships head into its third year.

Marshall said that it was a joy to witness the sport of road tennis poised and ready for take off.

“But as we soar to new heights, let us be mindful of attitudes, and morals must be onboard,” he reminded.

“Let’s continue to look for creative ways to help the young minds as most of them simply need support, encouragement and opportunity.”

President of the Road Tennis Association, Errol Edwards, said that for the indigenous sport of road tennis to continue, the nursery – which is the primary school – is needed.

Also on hand were some of the current players of the game, including  Julian 'Michael Jackson' White, Antoine Daniel, Kim Holder, and Emar Edwards.
