Warriors take down Bulls

THE Barbados Hilton Resort Warriors took down a docile Burger King Clapham Bulls by nine points at the YMCA, playing in the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association’s First Division League.

The Warriors played well overall, but found themselves down at the end of the first quarter. Ryan Leacock and Leron Elliot of the Bulls had a good start to the game with both players scoring six points in the first quarter. Leacock attacked the hoop and also had a key steal for a layup, which helped his team take an 18-15 lead at the end of the quarter.

Unfortunately, the points dried up for Clapham in the next quarter and they only mustered six points. The Warriors also had a poor quarter, but were still able to double Clapham’s tally and take a three-point advantage into the half.

The third saw the Warriors continue with the momentum left off from the end of the first half and doubled the Clapham score for a second consecutive quarter. They extended their three-point lead to 13 by the end of the third and went into the fourth with a nice cushion. That cushion was more than enough to hold off a pretty good fourth quarter by the Bulls, scoring 16 points in the effort to cut into and overtake the Warriors as time was winding down.

Time ran out on them however with the deficit at nine, with the score standing at 58-49. The Warriors had a good spread of scoring in the matchup with Akins Pratt being the top scorer with 15 points. Veterans Oran Skeete and Orlando Blades played well for 13 points each and Samuel Boyce added seven points. For the Bulls, Elliot finished with a game-high 17 points with ‘Mr. Consistent’ Ryan Leacock scoring 14 points. Jurad Mason scored eight points off the bench for a commendable effort.

The Warriors are now in fourth place in the southern zone standings with six wins and two losses and will look to rack up another win, but will have a challenging time as they are slated to play the formidable Spartans on Tuesday at the YMCA at 6:30 p.m. The Spartans also have six wins and two losses, but are fifth because of a lower scoring percentage.
