New Party Monarch L’il Rick flattened the competition.

Bushy Park flattened!

Lil Rick promised in his Party Monarch contribution for 2016, “Iz A Bajan”, that he would flatten Bushy Park for the MQI 98.1 Soca Royale – and that he did! Performing at position number seven on the night of the finals, Rick could be seen nowhere near these ranks when the judges concluded their deliberations.

The Party Monarch segment of Soca Royale got on its way around 9:30 p.m. and while this is the most energetic competition throughout the cropover festival, many patrons argued that not many artistes had much energy to give. Starting off the final was Leadpipe and Saddis with “Make A Fete”. While this duo is a dynamic force to be reckoned with the world over, their performance did not give the crowd much to shout about, even with Stiffy’s appearance at the end of their set.

Next out was a crowd favourite from the Sweet Soca competition and last year’s champion, Peter Ram. Ram’s rendition of “The Tribe” was much faster than the radio version and while some faithful supporters gyrated, some felt that Ram’s military strategy needed regrouping. The veteran, Edwin Yearwood with “Bore Ah Hole” was next. Edwin did not have a presentation preceding his performance like most others, but showed his experience as he and his dancers ended the performance by unexpectedly exiting the stage via a hole, created for them to jump in.

Two familiar faces at the competition, Mistah Dale and I-Web performed at number 4 and 5 respectively. Mistah Dale explained through his performance that he “Mek Tuh Fete” while I-Web, with the assistance of Alison Hinds, Contone and Pong showed the results of mixing “Wukup and Rum”. Nevertheless, the surprises kept coming. Mr. Blood with his tune “Get On Bad” arrived on stage in a man-pulled chariot, fully clothed in his Chiton as if ready for war in ancient Greek times, and energetically rendered his performance.

Moreover, performing at number 8 was TC, being the only female in the competition. TC’s popular “De People Place” was performed commendably with the use of various props and her unique style and closing the show was Mikey who wanted all at Bushy Park to understand that he “Live Fuh This”.

However, it was the performance at number 7 that received the perfect score from the judges. Bringing energy from beginning to end, being the only artiste to use a picong verse and singing a song which promotes patriotism could be some of the reasons why Lil Rick was crowned the winner of the contest, driving away a new car, $10,000 and many other prizes. Winning 38 points ahead of Mr. Blood who came second, Rick’s exclamation was, “I feel good!”

Third place was awarded to defending monarch Peter Ram who earned 58 points and fourth was Mikey with 50 points.
