Bayley¡¯s make it better second time around

By Michael Phillips

Former champions Bayley¡¯s Primary are today rejoicing after being given another lease on life in the Guardian Group Guardian General Herman Griffith Primary Schools¡¯ Cricket Competition. After tying with Milton Lynch last week in a somewhat controversial match-up, Bayley¡¯s pulled out a 10-wicket win yesterday at Empire.

The first time around, Bayley¡¯s went in to bat first and were bowled out for 79. However, Milton Lynch took to the crease first and put up 86 for the loss of eight. Geoff Mayers (16) and Ethan Welch (15) were their best chances as Asa Hutchinson ran through the Milton Lynch order, taking four wickets for 14 runs on his way through. Hutchinson was backed up by Joshua Straughn, who was good for two for six.

The Milton Lynch total could have been even lower had Bayley¡¯s capitalised on the chances to dismiss players much earlier. In the region of five catches were dropped in the Milton Lynch innings to allow them up to the fighting total of 86.

However, not wanting a repeat of last week¡¯s fiasco, which resulted in yesterday¡¯s match coming out of a situation where there were no provisions for a tie in the playoff round, Bayley¡¯s wasted no time with the target and had it knocked off with only one man going back to the pavilion.

Johann Layne and Kadeem Forde, who had starred with the ball in last week¡¯s game, could not get the better of a much more confident Nimar Bolden and Jamario Mayers-Alleyne.
The pair opened and played with patience and precision to lead Bayley¡¯s to 89. Along with several extras, Mayers-Alleyne¡¯s 13 and Bolden¡¯s bold unbeaten 34 were just what the doctor ordered to see last year¡¯s losing finalists into next week¡¯s semi-final against old rivals and defending champions Wesley Hall.

Today¡¯s action will see Hilda Skeene and Eden Lodge playing for the other semi-final spot open for Monday. The winner at Friendship will face St. Christopher¡¯s at the same venue on Monday.
