St. Catherine defeats YMPC by seven wickets


Republic Bank St. Catherine booked its spot in the quarter-finals of the Barbados Cricket Association’s Sagicor General Super Cup with a seven-wicket win over YMPC in the eighth round of matches on Saturday.

Captain Derick Bishop led the way with 5-24 from ten overs to help dismiss YMPC for 150 in 41.3 overs after it batted first. Shane Dowrich made 54, while YMPC captain Dwayne Smith made 29. St. Catherine cruised to 151-3 in 36.2 overs, with Shamar Cooke ending unbeaten on 65.

St. Catherine now join Sagicor Life UWI, ICBL Empire, CGI Maple and LIME in the quarter-finals, leaving three quarter-final spots up for grabs.

The Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) is one of five teams in with a chance of advancing to the knockout round after it defeated Carlton by nine wickets at Paragon. Carlton was dismissed by 90 in 35.5 overs after losing the toss and being sent in to bat. Carlo Morris had the top score of 17, while Ravendra Persaud took 3-12 for the soldiers. Renaldo Brathwaite took 2-11 and Renaldo Griffith 2-14.

BDFSP easily overhauled the meagre target, ending on 91-1 in 27.4 overs. Adrian Barath scored 43 and Dario Boyce 42 not out.

Super Centre Spartan is also in with a chance after recording a comprehensive 125-run victory over CounterPoint Wanderers in Queen’s Park. Spartan was asked to bat first and made 226-5 in its 50 overs, with Shamarh Brooks scoring 79 while Marrodon Bend ended unbeaten on 62.

A five-wicket haul of 5-16 by Andre Marshall helped to restrict Wanderers to 101 all out, while Chaim Holder took 2-26. Recently recalled West Indies batsman Kraigg Brathwaite scored 37, while Diego Stuart scored 23 not out.

In the final match played on Saturday, Banks Wildey defeated BRC BCL by 29 runs. Banks made 231-8 with Marlon Barclay leading the way with 91 off 92 balls, while Brandon King made 39 and Kofie Hurdle 32. Andrew Emtage took 5-32 and Devon Goodman 2-41.

BCL was then bowled out for 202 in 49.4 overs, with Shadd Simmons taking 2-37 and King 2-45. Jabarri Yarde top scored for BCL with 46, while Kamal Turney and Dave Clarke both made 32. (PG)
