Herman Griffith cricket bowls off today
Defending champion Wesley Hall Primary will take to the field at Friendship today against George Lamming Primary in the first round of matches in the 2013 Guardian General Insurance Herman Griffith Primary Schools’ Cricket Competition.
This will be the 15th year that Guardian General will be sponsoring the competition, dating back to its days as the Caribbean Home Insurance Company.
Nigel Adams, Executive Manager of Guardian General Insurance noted t hat while the company was recently rebranded, its commitment to the competition remains the same. He made the point that over the years the competition has grown to become one of the most anticipated fixtures on the primary schools’ calendar.
“For us as a corporate sponsor, cricket has always been seen as a powerful social interface with the communities we serve in Barbados, if only because of the role the game occupies in the psyche and the history of our people,” said Adams.
A total of 54 primary schools will be competing this year and they have been divided into eight zones. Making a welcome return to the competition this year is St. Catherine’s Primary who, despite having a roll of fewer than 150 students, has managed to win the competition twice.
The Guardian General Insurance Herman Griffith Primary Schools’ Cricket Competition was first played 33 years ago in 1980 with Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary being the first title holder. Wesley Hall Primary is the most successful school to date with nine titles in total.
All matches in the competition are scheduled to begin promptly at 10 a.m. (PG)
