Combermere lead by 176 runs in U-15 cricket final
Alexandra were made to toil in the field all day as Nicholls Baking Combermere racked up a 176 run lead heading into today’s final day of the LIME Under-15 Cricket Final.
Combermere ended yesterday on 173-3 with Shakkae Marshall and Zidane Clarke not out on eight and naught respectively. The day was devoid of the fireworks that occurred on the opening day when 20 wickets fell.
The Waterford lads started the day with a first innings lead of three runs and immediately openers Shian Brathwaite and Reniel Smith dropped anchor. The pair took no chances and batted so slowly that the score was just 71 without loss by the lunch break.
The two gave Combermere a good start though, with the partnership worth 107 by the time Smith was trapped leg before off the bowling of Shaquane Cave. He had made 45, inclusive of three boundaries, off 165 balls.
At tea time the score had just trickled on to 121-1 and there was murmuring among the spectators that Combermere was playing for a draw.
New batsman Thaddeus Chase upped the rate of scoring a notch and made 37 off 66 balls. His knock included five boundaries and the lone six of the innings before he was caught at mid-on by Xavier Cumberbatch off the bowling of Keemar Burrowes to leave Combermere on 161-2.
Burrowes would strike just four overs later when he would account for the crucial wicket of Brathwaite for 73. Brathwaite had faced 279 balls and scored four boundaries before he was caught by Shacolby Corbin.
Burrowes ended the day with 2-32 off 17 overs, while Cave ended with 1-20 off 17 overs.
Today’s play will resume at 11:00 a.m. with Combermere on 173-3. (PG)
