Barbados warm up with a victory

A 54-run sixth wicket partnership between Shamarh Brooks and Kyle Mayers lifted Barbados to victory in their Twenty20 practice match against Combined Campuses & Colleges at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus 3Ws Oval yesterday.

Chasing a target of 136 for victory, Barbados had slumped to 82/5 after losing three wickets for a mere 26 runs.

But the Barbados team did not seemingly panic and when Brooks and Mayers came together, they set about rebuilding the innings with singles and the odd boundary.

With plenty balls in hand, these two timed the innings to perfection when many thought that Barbados were struggling.

Mayers, who played in the final of the Inter Parish tournament the night before, struck the winning runs as Akeem Dewar was hammered for 13 runs off four balls in the penultimate over.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, CCC lost the wicket of Raymond Reifer with the score on 22. But the in form Walton carried on in a partnership of in a second-wicket partnership.

CCC lost four wickets while just adding 40 runs, but managed to consolidate in the end to get up to 135/5.

In reply Barbados lost their captain and opening batsman Dwayne Smith when he edged a ball to the wicketkeeper Walton who took a low catch to his right.

However Justin Brathwaite and Shane Dowrich shared in a 44-run second-wicket stand which steadied the Barbados batting. Brathwaite was seemingly struggling to time the ball well, but his strength was enough for him to clear the boundary twice on his way to 32 off 24 deliveries. He was caught trying to hook a ball.

A ball which cramped Dowrich for room was cut into the hands of the point field Ryan Wiggins and Dowrich departed for 20 off 18 balls.

Brooks (30) and Mayers (25) safely saw Barbados home.

The second practice match is slated for today at 1 p.m. at the same venue. (CG)
