Glorious night of amateur boxing

Cobia Breedy outclassed his Trinidadian opponent on Saturday when the Barbados Amateur Boxing Association hosted the Carlton Hope Memorial Tournament at the Springer Memorial Secondary School.
The Light Welterweight fighter won on points against Trinidad’s Stansi Charles, with the latter barely hanging on by sheer will-power before the last bell finally rang.
Both boxers were tied on points after the first round, but it was in the second round that Breedy took control of the contest. He unleashed a barrage of hard-hitting punches that had Charles rocking. By the third round it was clear to all that the Trinidadian was wobbly on his feet, but he somehow managed to remain standing. When the final bell rung, he barely made it back to his corner before collapsing on the top rope.
The female lightweight bout between BDF Sports Programme’s Gheeta Narine and Trinidad’s Keitha Charles lasted all of one round, with the Bajan winning by technical knock out. Narine gave the Trinidadian an uppercut and quickly followed up with a jab to the midsection that sent Charles reaching to the ropes for support. She was clearly in pain by that body blow and had to be attended to by the doctor.
National Gym boxer Keithland King also won by technical knockout over Trinidad’s Lance Garcia in their Light Heavyweight bout. It was clear that this fight was a total mis-match, with King head and shoulders above his Trini opponent. In the second round, King sent Garcia to the canvass but he was back up in flash and referee Anthony Jones gave him a standing eight count. King showed Garcia no quarter after that, unleashing a barrage of blows that had the Trinidadian dazed. Garcia got a reprieve from the onslaught when the bell signalling the end of the second round finally went.
The third round was more of the same and again King sent Garcia to the canvass and he was given his second and final eight count before Jones finally called off the fight.
In a Heavyweight bout Akeem Isadore of the National Gym won on points over Trinidad’s Gerald Narine. Mary Fraser showed no mercy on debutant Reatta Kowlessar in their pinweight match-up in the junior category. Kowlessar could barely defend herself and the referee had no choice but to stop the fight.
I’ Precious Lythcott of Belfield Gym won on points over Faith Fields in the other pinweight female bout of the night.
It was a glorious night for amateur boxing, the only disappointment being the fact that some of the Trinidadian boxers, whose trip was solely financed by the BABA, came overweight and could not be matched against their Barbadian opponents.
