United Insurance Derby Day set for tomorrow

Tomorrow is United Insurance Derby Day, and race fans should be out in their numbers at the Garrison Savannah, as the United Insurance Derby promises to be a very competitive race.
The race, which is open to 3-year-old West Indian Bred horses, will be run over 2000 metres, and carries a total purse of $110 300. Colts & Geldings take 126 pounds, while fillies take 121 pounds.
The United Insurance Derby is the third jewel of the Triple Crown, but there will not be a triple crown winner this year, as Aston Martin won the Guineas, while Summer Time won the Midsummer Classic.
A full gate of 12 horses will face starter Mark Batson, and both Aston Martin and Summer Time are in the field.
Aston Martin is a very strong colt that has won four of his eight starts, including the Guineas. He finished third to Summer Time in the Midsummer Classic, and it was felt that he did not get the luck in the race, and in the end had too much to do to catch Summer Time.
Summer Time, on the other hand, has only won two of her eight starts. Aston Martin won the Guineas at 1570 metres, while Summer Time won the Midsummer Classic at the longer trip of 1800 metres. Rickoshey is another colt with some ability, who can make his presence felt. He was second when Aston Martin won the Guineas, and second again when Summer Time won the Midsummer Classic.
An interesting one in this race is the filly, Open Secret, who on breeding should relish the 2000-metre trip. She won her first start and looked very impressive when coming through on the rail to snatch victory that day. She was badly beaten in her next two starts, but ran an exceptional race in the Midsummer Classic, when beaten only 2 1/4 lengths into fourth, with her jockey sitting flat on her back from almost three furlongs from home. Again she was making up ground on the rail, and it is possible that she could have been in the mix up at the finish had her jockey’s feet not come out of the irons. From these four runs, it does look like she is the type that performs best when on the rail.
Of the others, Run For Your Money and Iamsogroovy are good types, but may find the 2000-metre trip beyond them, while Galaxy is a useful type.
No one in this field has gone the extended trip of 2000 metres, and that is what makes it more interesting. (CH)
