NSC summer camp opens at National Stadium

7/3/2012

WITH over 1000 students now enrolled, the National Sports Council Summer Camp officially got underway yesterday with its opening ceremony at the National Stadium. The students, who will be spread out over 22 disciplines, were out in their numbers for the rather informal start to their six-week camp.

The LIME, Sagicor and Powerade-sponsored camp, which is in its 27th year used yesterday to deal with house-keeping matters such as orientation of students and introductions to counsellors and coaches. Speaking during her address, Assistant Director of Sports at the National Sports Council Mona Alleyne told the campers at the National Stadium that she expected that not only would all students be exposed to several different sports, but that they would enjoy themselves while doing so. “This camp is a very exciting camp because it gives all the instruction regarding the disciplines that we do. Some of the campers would have been exposed to some of the disciplines in their schools and we trust that those of you that will be taking on new disciplines for the first time will enjoy them,” she said.

With instruction to begin today at several venues the council is using their full complement of 52 coaches which has been augmented by several past and present national players as well as returning scholarship students. With a force of just over 100, Alleyne stated that she was confident that students will be receiving the finest of instruction over the next six weeks. “Again we have many assistant coaches and we have checked their backgrounds and screened them to determine what skill they have so that we know that you are going to be getting the coaching that you deserve,” she said.

Until August 10 up to 1500 students will be receiving instruction in a wide variety of sports ranging from cheerleading and chess to tennis and taekwondo at several venues inclusive of Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, Marine Squash Courts, LIME Grounds and Barbados Golf Club to name a few. (MP)
