Quarters, Semis decided in tennis tourney

6/20/2012

Several players have advanced to the quarter-final stage - and beyond - in the 2012 ESSO Junior Tennis Championships, currently under way at the National Tennis Centre in Wildey.
In the Boy’s Under-18, pre-tournament favourite Ajani King booked his place in the semi-finals with a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 victory over Shane Mustor. He will face Gavin Hutchinson who disposed of Aquille Trotman 6-0, 6-1 in the quarters.

In the bottom half of the draw, Christian Maxwell came from a set down to beat Shae Branch 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round. He will next face Matthew Estwick for a berth in the semi-finals, while quarter-finalist Simon Lewis awaits the winner of a first round match between Jelani Bartlett and Brandon Dowell.

In the Boy’s Under-16, the quarter-finals have been decided. Samuel Manning, who advanced after No. 1 seed Brandon Lee retired hurt, will face Andrew Symmonds, who defeated Shae Branch 6-2, 6-3, while Matthew Estwick, who defeated Nicholas Charles in a tough three setter 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, will face Yannick Polanen who advanced with a ‘no contest’ against Jared Spencer.

In what is expected to be a significant clash, Ajani King will oppose Gavin Hutchinson in the quarters after King disposed of Emil Trotman 6-3, 6-3, and Hutchinson of Colby Cutting 6-1, 6-0.

In the final quarter-final match-up, Aquille Trotman will play Simon Lewis after both players won difficult three setters in the second round. Trotman came from a set down to defeat Shane Mustor 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7), while Lewis got the better of Xavier Lawrence 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
In the Boy’s Under-14, Romani Mayers, Andrew Gill, Colby Cutting and Andrew Symmonds comprise the top half of the quarter-final draw. Mayers, who recorded a shock win over Yannick Polanen, will face Gill who defeated Joshua Ponton 1-4, 4-2, 5-4 (3). Cutting, who had an easy outing against Jordan Every, will face Symmonds who defeated Kyle Wiggins
4-2, 4-1 in the second round.

In the bottom half of the draw, Samuel Manning will face Gabriel Taylor, while Kyle Frost will play Xavier Lawerence. Frost had the most difficult second round match, winning in three sets against Nicholas Charles.

In the Boy’s Under-12, Andrew Gill, Alex Griffith, Jordan Every, Romani Mayers, Jadon Broome, and Aaron Hayden have all booked their places in the quarter-finals. Amongst the girls, Kiana Marshall and Cherise Slocombe will contest the Under-18 final.

Slocombe’s name again features in the Under-16 draw and she will oppose Ilana Blackwood for the title. Slocombe defeated Kayla Frost 6-2, 6-4 in the semis, while Blackwood disposed of Jamie Lewis 7-6 (6), 6-1.

Lewis, however, booked her spot in the Under-14 final with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Megan Gilkes. She awaits the winner of a match between Symphony Griffith and Ilana Blackwood. (AH)
