Silver celebrations for Mount Gay Rum regatta
4/29/2010
The 25th staging of the Mount Gay Rum/ Boatyard Regatta sets sail Thursday evening, May 20 with an opening ceremony as well as the ritual Skippers Bag pass-off and briefing – this regatta’s classic way to meet and greet the competition. The first gun is Friday morning, May 21, 2010, signalling the start of three days of exciting sailing and festivities.
Marc McCollin, Brand Manager of Mount Gay Rum says that he has been working with all the relevant parties: The Barbados Sailing Association, the Barbados Yacht Club and The Boatyard in order to make the regatta’s 25th anniversary event a memorable one:
“Among the additions to this year’s event is the hosting of an official opening and closing ceremony ... which have previously been more low key, but this year we are making sure that all the sailors and attendees are royally treated to organised events including live music!”
So far over 40 entries have been received for the Mount Gay Rum/Boatyard Regatta, with the popular J24 class attracting nearly half of the yachts. An exciting addition for 2010 will be the introduction of the Melges 24 Class.
The Barbados Tourism Authority has partnered with the organisers to provide assistance to a number of Caribbean entrants so that the Mount Gay/Boatyard Regatta can continue to have an encouraging number of regional competitors.
The Mount Gay Rum/Boatyard Regatta will be staged May 20-23, 2010 starting at 10 a.m each day from the Barbados Yacht Club.
