Education tęte-ŕ-tęte shows promise

2/22/2010

THE Barbados Secondary Teachers Union (BSTU), Ministry of Education officials and principal of the Alexandra School had their first meeting at the end of last month and the second meeting is scheduled for March 1.
Mary Redman, president of the BSTU, stated that they did meet with the principal Jeff Broomes and while acknowledging that it was a positive start, she told the Barbados Advocate that she expects that there will be several more meetings.

“So far, we have started to skim the surface of the issues we are attempting to address, since there are about 30 outstanding issues. We expect that resolving them will go beyond one other meeting,” said Redman.

“Our grouse was that the principal initially refused to attend any meeting with the BSTU called by the Ministry of Education and so as a result, we couldn’t get matters resolved. Once he is at the meetings and the Permanent Secretary chairs the meetings, our expectation is that the issues will be resolved in the best interest of the teachers and the students of the Alexandra School.”

Redman said that as long as meetings continue in a satisfactory manner and progress is being made then industrial action by the BSTU would be suspended. (AR)
