CDEMA carries out earthquake simulation

11/28/2009

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) held an earthquake simulation yesterday afternoon to prepare for the possible occurrence of another such disaster in the region.

During the exercise, the 43 staff members of CDEMA were evacuated from their two separate offices at Manor Lodge, St. Michael, and then assembled at a pre-arranged point. The drill was part of the response to the November 29, 2007 earthquake which affected 12 CDEMA participating states, and was intended to promote earthquake safety throughout the region.

CDEMA encouraged schools, households and other entities to participate in a drop, cover, and hold exercise, as is recommended for those who find themselves indoors during the event of an earthquake. Staff members also participated in this exercise followed by roll call and head count.

In a post-simulation evaluation, CDEMA staff had several suggestions on how to improve the process, such as maintaining a list of everyone in the office at any given time, conducting a sweep of the building to make sure everyone had exited, securing offices to prevent looting and erecting signs at earthquake assembly areas.
