Three-man delegation attends Youth Forum of the Americas

When the two-day Youth Forum of the Americas commences in Trinidad and Tobago today, ahead of the official start of the 5th Summit of the Americas scheduled for April 17 to 19, Barbados will be ably represented by three young men, who left these shores on Sunday for the twin-island state.

Despite not being successful in sending the 12-member youth delegation that they had initially proposed, patron of the Barbados Youth Development Council (BYDC), Hamilton Lashley, told the Barbados Advocate that he is confident the island will be well represented as three outstanding youths were selected to represent Barbados.

The team comprises of Damien Mascoll, Public Relations Officer of the BYDC; Jason Francis, President of the BYDC; and Senator Damien Griffith.

Lashley noted that he will meet with the team following their return later this week to facilitate dialogue on the issues
addressed during the meeting. He added that through meaningful discussions at the executive level, the BYDC as the
umbrella body for all youth organisations in Barbados will work towards formulating “a plan of action” to counter the challenges currently affecting young people in the island.

“This youth forum provides an opportunity for our three-member youth delegation to be exposed to some of the best practices in youth development in this hemisphere. Once the team returns, we will review the similarities and differences relating to the way that youth affairs are being handled in various states and this will assist us in charting a way forward for Barbados,” Lashley outlined.

The Youth Forum of the Americas is an initiative of the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT), the General Secretariat of the Organisation of American States and the National Secretariat of the 5th Summit of the Americas. It serves as a “pre-summit forum” of the 5th Summit of the Americas, a space for young people to hold discussions and contribute to the themes of the hemispheric talks, which will be attended by President of the United States, Barack Obama.
