Unexpected ending to Cohobblopot 2012
8/7/2012
By Kerri Gooding
Many patrons were upset as the night of celebrations for Cohobblopot ended on an unexpected sour note.
As patrons watched Ricky Reid who has aliases such as Lil’ Rick and Mr. Crop Over perform with finesse and in fine form, adhering to his set list and planning to introduce artistes who he has collaborated with over the years, their hopes came crashing down when around 1:00am an organiser made Reid aware that he had to wrap up his performance soon.
Flabbergasted Reid appealed to the crowd who were in disbelief at the notification. Reid invited the Hypa Kids and Unda Dawg to share the stage with him and then wrapped up his set immediately with his silver-award winning Sweet Soca track, “Ahhh, I like muhself”.
Most patrons made their annoyance clear questioning the decision to pull the plug on Reid who for the first time in years was part of the headline act. Reid in addition to Shontelle Layne were supposed to headline the show and pull a large crowd to Kensington Oval. Many tolerated Layne’s performance, questioning the National Cultural Foundation’s choice to incorporate the R & B singer into the nation’s calypso/soca festival.
At the end of the night as patrons left disappointed, they labelled the treatment of Ricky Reid as a display of blatant disrespect of his time, effort and talent. Reid was most saddened by the fact that he only got to perform his collaboration with Mr. Lexxus and there were entertainers such as Kimberley Inniss, Shanta Price, Alan Shepherd and the Caribbean Soca Queen, Alison Hinds waiting backstage in vain, as the show which usually concludes at 2:00am came to a close at 1:30am.
Many in attendance, including commentator Admiral Nelson said, “Something more could have been done.” Reid made apologies to the artistes, fans and dancers who had a different show and night planned in their minds.
