THE 28 teachers who participated in the Teaching of Creative Writing workshop, the Media Resource Department and the Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, the Hon. When some of the teachers were interviewed by the Barbados Advocate they made it known that the workshop was welcomed, timely and very critical.
Jeva Greenidge who spoke on behalf of her colleagues who attended the sessions for primary school teachers said that they learned strategies to utilise in the classroom. “It was very beneficial and enlightening, giving us insight into creative methodologies.” Greenidge said that the workshop has left her enthused to actively seek out more workshops in the future.
Minister Jones is most pleased that the teachers took the time to attend the workshop during the children’s vacation. Jones wants to see the application of the learned techniques and the delivery of the information gained in the classroom setting. Jones highlighted the importance of the workshop in teaching the writing process to students preparing for the Barbados Secondary School Entrance Examination, teaching the primary students especially to structure essays.
Sandra Hunte-Rock of St. Leonard’s Boys School attended the secondary school sessions and said, “The course was informative. I was introduced to several new ideas and given useful tips on how to motivate students and how to make my lessons more enjoyable and relevant to theme.” Attending the primary sessions, Cynthia Moore of Deacon’s Primary said, “It was excellent. It was like a refresher for me,” and Sandra Fields of Belmont Primary said, “It was very interesting and it helped me to learn new ways of teaching composition writing”.
