‘Master Jeff’ revealed
7/25/2012
DURING Day 14 of the Commission of Inquiry into the Alexandra School dispute, an alternate to the Principal’s “Uncle Jeff” persona was revealed.
According to Senior Teacher and Head of the English Department at the Alexandra School, Leslie Lett, there is a side to Principal Jeff Broomes that does not coincide with the affectionate name “Uncle Jeff” assigned to the Principal by students. Lett maintained that Broomes is one thing as a teacher, but rather another as a Principal and administrator.
While Broomes’ abilities as a teacher have not been disputed, Lett maintains that as an administrator, he transforms from “Uncle Jeff” to “Master Jeff”. Lett gave a number of examples of his experiences with Principal Broomes at the Alexandra School, indicating that the Principal is not tolerant of views that conflict with his own – a quality that Lett pointed out is not one expected of one in a leadership role.
When addressing the alleged division between the senior and junior teachers at the school, Lett even went as far as to say that he is convinced that one of the Principal’s tactics for administration is to “divide and conquer”.
When asked what his recommendations to the Commission would be, as seems to be customary with all witnesses, Lett said that it is his belief that the relationship between the Principal and teachers is beyond repair, and nothing can be done once the Principal maintains his current leadership practices.
He further indicated that his recommendation is separation of the Principal from the school, adding that his leadership is “toxic and causes convulsions… disharmony”. (AN)
